I’m Tamara – the Host of Without Regret the Podcast

I grew up very poor to a single mother after she divorced my alcoholic and abusive father when I was 6 years old. I have one biological brother with the same mom and dad, who is 4-years older than me. It was just me, him and our struggling mother doing the best she could for many years.

Knowing how poor we were, and it being the 80s when college wasn’t a big deal, I made the decision in elementary school that college wasn’t for me. I never had much of a reason to do well in school and dropped out in 10th grade at 16-years old. I was partying a lot and had absolutely no direction for my life.

After a bad breakup, I ended up married at 18, pregnant at 19, arrested at 19, divorced by 20 and arrested again at 21. I moved back in with my mom and got a job. Just a job – at the same place my Mom worked (where I still work, 25 years or so later – kindof). I found myself a single, young mother with no plans for the future. I was just getting by.

But having that daughter lit a fire under my ass to do better for her! I wanted her to have a better life growing up than I had. And I had no one to count on for that except myself. So I did what I had to do and made my life the best I possibly could. Not every decision was the right one. There were ups and downs along they way – and will likly be more. Life can’t always be a bed of roses, but it is how you handle those tough times that will determine your ultimate outcome and happiness.
